POINT EXPERIENCES

While I still have tons to learn, I believe my experiences at Florida International University (FIU), the Global Learning Medallion office, and the Nursing Program have taught me a lot about myself, the world, and the dynamic field of nursing.

To demonstrate, one takeaway from my journey at FIU is my role as President of the Student Nurses’ Association and GlobeMed. In fact, one of the first things I noticed is that I have been able to meet and befriend students—not only within my immediate chapter, but also from chapters across the nation—all with similar interests and goals. And since we all grow together, competition is rarely a concern. Instead, I have built up an incredible support system whenever I need advice or just good company.

This leads me to my next point: one of my favorite activities that the Global Learning Medallion office provided me was with “Woke Wednesdays.” Every Wednesday, I would login excited to see the topic of conversation. It was a really interesting method of getting to know other FIU students as well as offering a safe place to discuss controversial topics online. The founder also does a phenomenal job at keeping people up-to-date with contemporary issues in the United States. To illustrate, just last week he posted an update from the CDC, a reputable source, regarding the prevention for the spread of the coronavirus. As a nursing major, this draws my attention because I want to ensure that I am practicing evidence-based measures in both healthcare as well as in my daily life.

CAPSTONE

Being a native from Miami, Florida, I have witnessed the interconnections between the various cultures that define my world. Here, combinations of sushi and Cuban coffee have become mere customs in my own daily life, and while this diversity seemed readily available in my city, I realized that these daily excursions had served as mere glimpses of the different cultures that I longed to understand. These inhibitions restrained my own understanding of my city’s roots and people. Thus, in June of 2018, I decided on participating in a study abroad program—journeying past the boundaries of my city to witness the cultural reality of Spain, while also fulfilling my honors prerequisites.
